This walk, which combines history and architecture, showcases Suzhou Creek’s remarkable transformation from what was once China’s dirtiest river into a model for the ecological regeneration of urban waterways. This transformation has created green public spaces that reconnect Shanghai residents with their river.

Alongside newly constructed buildings such as Tian’an 1000 Trees – a living building that rises like a modern ‘mountain of gardens’ – the river’s industrial past, once lined with warehouses and textile factories, is reflected in the creative reuse of the buildings in the M50 arts district.

This walk reveals a little-known but fascinating part of Suzhou Creek.
