Beyond the concessions stood even vaster mansions than inside the concessions. Here lived the foreign expat elite of colonial times, in the countryside and in luxurious surroundings. The famous Columbia Circle used to be the place for rich Americans, the Columbia Country Club was their playground. Xinhua Lu leads to Jiaotong University, one of China’s well-respected universities. Founded as a public school at the end of the 19th century, it became a technical university. Today, Jiaotong University is one of the „think tanks“ in Shanghai. The campus can proudly present the incredible architecture of former times. Therefore, the financial and educational power of the city lived close together, and once more, this unique mixture spices the whole sweet cake of the city called Shanghai.
